Locked Out? Here's What to Do (and What Not to Do)
February 22, 2026 · 5 min read
It happens to the best of us — a gust of wind, a forgotten key, a jammed lock. The moment you realise you're locked out, resist the urge to force the door. Here's the smart approach.
Step 1: Check All Entry Points
Before doing anything else, try every door and window. Back doors, garage entries, and basement windows are often left unlocked. A two-minute walk around the house may save you a service call.
Step 2: Call Someone with a Spare Key
A family member, trusted neighbour, or your building manager may have a copy. This is also a good reminder to give a spare key to someone you trust if you haven't already.
Step 3: Call a Licensed Locksmith
If no spare key is available, call a licensed locksmith. Ask for ID when they arrive, request a price estimate before work begins, and make sure they can provide a receipt.
What NOT to Do
Don't try to kick the door open — you'll likely damage the frame and void your insurance. Don't use a credit card on a deadbolt — it only works in movies. Don't climb through windows — the injury risk far outweighs the locksmith fee.
How to Avoid Lockouts in the Future
Hide a spare key in a combination lockbox (not under a mat). Consider a smart lock with keypad entry. Make it a habit to check for your key before pulling the door shut.
How Long Should It Take?
A professional locksmith should open a standard residential lock in 5–15 minutes without damage. If someone says they need to drill the lock immediately, get a second opinion — drilling is rarely necessary for home lockouts.
